BioFibre Plastics
TTS is in the process of developing a unique line of biofibre-plastic biocomposite products that are environmentally sustainable and exhibit excellent performance characteristics, such as durability.
While the majority of plastic products are made from pure plastic, they can be reinforced with reinforcing fibres when additional strength is required. The resulting reinforced plastics consist of biofibres in a plastic matrix. These products are biocomposites – one or more dissimilar biomaterials combined to make a stronger and more durable bioproduct. The plastic matrix supports the reinforcing biofibres, which impart their particular mechanical and physical properties to the finished product.
TTS’ biofibre thermoplastic products include two kinds of composites. One is developed using recycled milk cartons and re-processed agricultural and wood fibre as the structural reinforcing component. They can be moulded into containers, used to reinforce flooring, or custom designed to replace existing petroleum-derived plastic or fibre glass products on the market. No virgin materials are required to make these products and their tensile strength properties can out-compete many existing composite products. Another is developed by blending thermoplastic fibres with biofibres and engineered into nonwoven fibre mats. These kinds of biofibre thermoplastic mats can be thermal molded into 2D or 3 D products.
TTS’ biofibre thermoset plastic composites are developed using bast fibre engineered nonwoven fibre mats as reinforced materials. These kinds of biofibre thermoset composites can be used as automotive exterior components.
